On Beyond the Gates, June watched as Samantha and Kat tried to select appropriate shoes for the cotillion on a tablet from their table at Orphey Gene's. Kat offered to help her niece find an escort if she still needed one, but Samantha beamed that it was being “handled.” June didn't share Kat's joy about Samantha being on Donnell's arm for the ball, asking how old the boy was. Kat assured Sam's biomom that the whole family could vouch for Donnell, since they'd known his family for years.

June mentioned that she'd seen an upcoming promo for Anita's television interview. After Kat pointed out that it was usually women 40 and over who needed to get screened for breast cancer – unless there were other factors – Samantha pressed June to have her own mammogram; June agreed to talk to her doctor about it, now that she had health insurance.

Kat left for Uptown to meet Tomás, who complained about Hayley suddenly undermining him at the law firm. Though Kat was willing to chalk it up to Hayley being traumatized by her mugging, Tomás griped that Hayley had had it in for him before that had even happened. Kat thought Tomás should get a a different job after he told her how Bill had made him wrong for Hayley delivering documents it wasn't her business to handle, but Tomás opted to tough it out. Changing the subject, Kat asked if she could stay at his place later that night...or “how about forever?” she tacked on.

Vanessa greeted Donnell at the country club; the college student only half jokingly claimed that his mom always wanted to keep him away so he'd continue his studies. Donnell felt better after Vanessa assured him that her summons wasn't a sign of trouble – he then chuckled at the idea of being an escort for “pigtails and braces” Samantha. Vanessa noted that Samantha was fast growing up, then reminisced about how the whole family had come together for dance practice the last time Donnell had been an escort. Donnell felt that Doug would be proud of the way they were surviving his death and soon agreed to take Samantha to the gala.

Donnell reported that his grief-stricken twin sister, Deanna, had finally emerged enough to resume some activities. In fact, Donnell went on, friends of Deanna's had set her up on a date with a guy they'd found on a dating app that started with an “H.” Vanessa was horrified to realize her son was referring to Heart Attach and wanted Donnell to talk Deanna out of the date. Donnell insisted that doing so would be a breach of trust – and he had already shown his loyalty to Vanessa by keeping the fact of her relationship with Joey from his sibling.

Vanessa wanted to know if Donnell were truly all right with her moving on with Joey; Donnell said he liked Joey, yet he had heard some rumors about the man. Donnell was curious when Vanessa swore there was another side to her beau – and he was thrilled to learn that the clinic Mr. Armstrong was co-funding was being named for his father. Vanessa advised Donnell not to believe the Joey rumors.

Back at the diner, June was amazed at how well Samantha had taken to “the Dupree life” but wanted to be sure she wasn't just going through with the cotillion to please her dads. Samantha promised that her interest in being a debutante was her own and called it a “sisterhood” in which she could make lifelong connections – and friends. When Samantha told June that there were still those in the circuit who didn't consider her a Dupree, June called those people “jelly.” “'Jelly' just walked in,” Samantha grimaced as Francesca glided into the eatery.

Francesca tried to taunt Samantha over not having a date for the ball, but Samantha fired back that Francesca's attitude meant she didn't have a date, either. Samantha's jaw dropped when Francesca bragged that Nathan had asked to be her escort; Samantha cringed at the mention of her ex-crush and June stood up for her, telling Francesca that Nathan had “zero respect for women.” Francesca still insisted on mocking Samantha for being dateless – until Donnell entered. June took pleasure in alerting Francesca that her daughter would be on the young McBride's arm at the dance.

Later, Samantha breathlessly told Donnell that him being her escort “couldn't be more perfect” – though she caught herself and asked if he was sure he wanted to “wade into the mean girl soup.” Donnell was sure they'd have fun and got Samantha's attention when he spoke of what it had been like going to his previous cotillion when his father was alive. Samantha told Donnell that he didn't have to take part in the current one if it brought him pain, but he decided he was up for the task. Besides, he said, he knew Samantha was involved in the clinic that would bear his father's name, and he added that he wouldn't miss its opening for anything.

Hayley was pleased when Bill unexpectedly brought her a bouquet that was a replica of the one she'd carried down the aisle when they were married. The Hamiltons couldn't believe their one-year anniversary was fast coming up – and Hayley was grateful to sleep in her own bed again after all the nights at the hotel. She was also glad that the cops had gotten to her “attacker,” Wesley, before Joey had; Hayley didn't want Bill losing his law license getting revenge on the man who had hurt her. She dramatically said no one had stood up for her before and brought herself to near tears claiming that, if Lynette hadn't saved her, Bill might have had to plan her funeral.

Bill shared that he had talked to the prosecutor in Wesley's case and gotten his crime bumped up to a felony, which carried a jail term of 15 years. Hayley hid her discomfort over the framing by insisting to Bill that she didn't want to testify against Wesley in court; Bill said that her and Lynette's positive identifications should be enough to stick.

Hayley wondered if Bill could work his magic on a different prosecutor – the one on Lynette's embezzlement case. Bill reiterated that he had let Tomás handle the proceeding, but Hayley argued that Lynette had saved her life. The lawyer remarked that Lynette had also gotten his firm to handle her case pro bono, and that he had already put her up in a fancy hotel room.

The Hamiltons were interrupted by Bill's phone – it was Elon, who let Bill know that Wesley had been released from prison. Hayley freaked out, aware that Wesley knew her address, so Bill determinedly began to make some calls.

Joey was in the back room of the Lakeview on his cell, commanding someone to “bring him here.” Soon, Wesley was escorted in. He knew who Joey was and protested that he hadn't assaulted anyone. Armstrong revealed that he had been the one to get Wesley released because he was at the “center of a mystery” he wanted to solve. Asked about Hayley's stolen engagement ring, Wesley said he had never seen it, and that the reason Hayley's keys and wallet had been found in his overcoat pocket was probably because some kids had pranked him while he was asleep, which happened all the time.

Wesley said that just because his friends called him “Sledge” Hammer, it didn't mean he was a tough guy. Joey asked if Wesley knew June; when Wesley affirmed he did, Joey disclosed that June had said his arrest was a mistake. Wesley was humbled that June had come to his defense, but believed he was “cooked” in terms of the law.

When Joey decided Wesley needed to leave town, Wesley refused because he was supposed to have weekly check-ins with the police. The casino owner gave Wesley a wad of cash and advised him to take off before the week was up; he would take care of the loose ends. Wesley mused that he could travel to Boulder, Colorado to see his half-sister – and agreed to Joey's condition that he never come back to D.C.

Vanessa passed Wesley on the way out and intuited that Joey was up to something. When Joey predictably didn't elaborate, Vanessa instead told him that Donnell was in town and doing his best to support her and Joey. After Vanessa bellyached about Deanna being set up on a date through Heart Attach, Joey figured that her daughter was just testing the waters – and, she was of age. Vanessa couldn't abide Deanna having her date with her assigned escort – Diego – but Joey found Vanessa's concern hypocritical, since Vanessa had certainly made good use of Heart Attach's services when she was a customer.

Getting Deanna on the phone, Vanessa managed to get her to change her plans with the promise of theatre tickets to a sold-out show...which she hadn't yet gotten. Joey still thought Deanna should be left to handle herself, but when Vanessa admitted that she didn't want her daughter to make her mistakes, Joey couldn't help but admire her.

Bill found out that Joey had gotten Wesley released from prison and wanted to storm over to the casino to confront him. Hayley played the fear card and begged Bill to stay with her instead, using sex as bait; Bill fell for it.

At Orphey Gene's, June was shocked to see Wesley peeking in; he wanted to thank her for maintaining his innocence, which had led to his release. June was glad that Wesley was out and offered to connect him with a good lawyer she knew. Wesley gently declined and simply said that he had to go – and that he wouldn't have been able to leave had he not expressed his appreciation to June first. June regarded him wistfully as he walked out the door.
