Here's what went down Tuesday, June 2, 2026, on Beyond the Gates when Marcel had some crow to eat, Hayley was the worst assistant ever, and Dani and Smitty proved a new comedy team.
What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Eva emerged from her shower to find Leslie in her apartment. Though Eva was clear that she had somewhere to be, Leslie refused to leave and wondered why she barely saw her daughter anymore; she missed the times when she and Eva spent plenty of time together. Eva countered that Leslie had filled her life by bringing her to town to meet Ted, for whom she was working – and now Eva was having to fill in managing the clinic at Leslie's behest. Between work and seeing Izaiah, Eva said, her plate was full – though she promised Leslie would always be the number one person in her life.
At Uptown, Smitty ran into Kat, who had just finished listening to another one of her beloved crime podcasts. Kat announced that she was thinking of starting one of her own – the first episode focusing on Lynette's disappearance and Lia's potential tie to it. Smitty stepped in and reminded Kat that she couldn't just make accusations without proof, and, though Smitty had moved clandestinely to help Jacob bust the blood plasma ring, they were both trained professionals with procedures and ethics to consider. Kat demoted herself from “journalist” to amateur detective, but Smitty was adamant that crime solving wasn't entertainment, like her podcasts – it had real-life implications and consequences.
Naomi stopped at Dani's to pick her up for Jacob's commendation, but Dani could see that her daughter was troubled. Dani listened as Naomi lamented Jacob's decision to remain undercover – and the fact that she had only signed on to be married to a beat cop, not an undercover detective. Naomi appreciated Dani's advice, which was to live in the moment and let Jacob be who he needed to be.
I give props to those who deserve it, and believe me, y'all, he's worth it

Izaiah met with Darlene at Orphey Gene's, where Darlene wanted to throw a family dinner in addition to the commendation set to honor Jacob. Darlene pressed for Izaiah to put aside his disdain toward his father for the meal, but Izaiah wouldn't agree to attend if he couldn't bring Eva. After Darlene scoffed that she wasn't going to hold her tongue for some manipulative girl who was only passing through Izaiah's life, he hinted that he would cut Darlene off if she couldn't show his significant other some respect.
At the police station, Marcel noticed that Jacob was late for his own ceremony; when Jacob finally showed, Marcel mockingly urged everyone to bow down. Jacob snapped that he wasn't about Marcel's crap, then declared that he wasn't worthy of recognition because The Impaler was still on the loose and his best friend was dead. Elon told Jacob that loss was a part of their job, with Marcel becoming sincere and adding that he had lost people close to him while on duty as well; it was just something they had to get used to. Elon encouraged Jacob to not to let the losses overpower the gains. The red market had been compromised and rendered nearly inoperable thanks to Jacob, Elon reported, going on to say that he was proud of Jacob. Marcel surprisingly concurred, remarking, “You got some serious game, young blood.”
Drugged out

Darlene arrived at the station with cake and insisted on family photos – until Izaiah saw Eva coming in and wanted her included in them. Eva got edged out when Darlene asked her to take the pictures, and Darlene nearly deleted the one that captured Eva. Suddenly, Darlene thanked Eva for coming and allowed her to help set up refreshments, but she privately told Izaiah she was only extending courtesy to Eva so as not to ruin Jacob's big day.
Dani unintentionally minimized Derek's death in front of Jacob, causing him to sulk off. Izaiah spoke to Jacob, remembering when they had encountered each other in the bad neighborhood during Jacob's investigation. Jacob apologized for thinking his once delinquent brother had been up to no good. When Dani wondered why Bill hadn't arrived, Naomi said that she had invited him, but that Hayley had declined on his behalf.
Waiting for a table at the country club, Hayley checked that her bottle of poison was at the ready in her cleavage. When Bill joined her, he smiled that she had worn him out so much with her bedroom antics that he had slept like a dead man; Hayley smirked to herself. Bill put his arm around Hayley, but when he got too close to her bosom, she brushed his hand away, making Bill think he was being a rotten husband.
Hayley insisted that she didn't want to cause a scandal just when Fairmont Crest seemed to be accepting her; as for Bill, he had been mulling over Dani's upset over him not noticing Mike Davis coming on to her for years.
Hayley sniffed that the Duprees always found a way to make Bill feel bad about himself – and that, if Dani had been a better wife, Bill wouldn't have had to look elsewhere for companionship. Bill was perplexed when he received a text from Dani tsk-tsking him for missing a family event; Hayley admitted that she had intercepted Naomi's invite while Bill had been asleep. She passed on the event, given how stressed out he'd been. Besides, Hayley snarked, he was only missing a blue ribbon ceremony for a nepo baby. Bill thought he should at least call Jacob and excused himself, giving Hayley a chance to order a fresh cup of coffee for Bill and lace it with poison. When Bill returned, he eagerly guzzled the tainted joe.
King of sorrow

Smitty found Jacob at the station and congratulated him on the commendation, but Jacob robotically said he needed time alone. Moments later, Elon began the ceremony and Jacob walked back in, seemingly wiping tears from his eyes. While accepting the commemorative plaque given him by the station, Jacob again heard gunshots in his mind and looked like a frightened animal. He thanked his father/boss for the honor but shoved the plaque in his desk drawer once the guests dispersed. Naomi offered to join him when he decided he was going to ditch his own celebration to get a drink at Uptown, but Jacob directed Naomi to check on Ashley while he went out alone.
Elon cracked that he was surprised Izaiah was still at the station. Izaiah informed his father that he was there for Jacob, while Naomi assured Eva that it had taken a while for Darlene to warm up to her as well. Naomi left and asked Dani to cover for her and Jacob; when Darlene approached Dani – clearly not liking her, either – Dani said Jacob and Naomi had gone out to get some fresh air, distracting Darlene by telling her that Smitty wanted more of her infamous cake. Smitty said that Dani owed him one.
Darlene saw Marcel and cackled that she had seen his soon-to-be-ex-wife, who was living her best life without him. Then Leslie sauntered in and flirted with Marcel, annoying Darlene by crowing that she was amazed Jacob was being honored, since he'd never actually solved a crime before. Eva tried to intervene, but Leslie demanded that Darlene be nice to Eva, or else “your husband will have to arrest me for beating your ass.” Darlene was ready to throw hands until Eva led her away. Darlene couldn't believe Marcel had ditched his wife for demon Leslie; Marcel grinned that now he was living hisbest life.
Leslie was displeased that Eva had ventured out to spend time with the Hawthornes instead of her, and without telling her, no less. Eva cited Leslie's behavior as the reason she had kept quiet and marveled that Darlene was actually being nice to her. Leslie took that as a challenge and vowed to “out-nice” Darlene, but instead Leslie antagonized Darlene by bragging about Izaiah joining her, Eva, and Ted for Eva's birthday – and hinting that Izaiah preferred being around Leslie to being around Darlene. To prove her point, Leslie ran over and hugged Izaiah as Darlene's face dropped.
Kat came across Jacob at Uptown and, after seeing that he was in a foul mood, awkwardly offered him a celebratory drink in light of his commendation. Jacob wondered how much he'd have to chug back to forget the sound of the gunfire that had killed Derek, prompting Kat to give him a comforting embrace.
