Smitty was trying to make his deadline for his red market story, but Martin was on the phone, Samantha was chattering with Chelsea and Kat about content creation, and Jessica was embroiled in a chess game with Tyrell. Finally, Smitty ordered everyone out so he could work. Later, Smitty tried to ignore knocking at the door, but, seeing his visitor was Naomi, he ushered her in. She wanted to have an overdue conversation with him about how he had been the one to bring Jacob the tip which had led to Jacob going undercover.

Naomi felt conflicted because she hated what Smitty's story had cost, yet she was also grateful that Jacob had had someone to confide in about the investigation, which he had been prevented from telling Naomi about. Smitty was relieved that Naomi wasn't angry with him, and Naomi realized that Smitty had been watching out for her while Jacob had been gone. Naomi cryptically added that she understood the necessity of keeping secrets from loved ones in order to protect them.

Exiled to Orphey Gene's, Kat and Chelsea asked Samantha for details about the cotillion; the teen described how Chessy had tried to trip her and how Donnell had swooped in to save her. Catching Samantha's glow, her aunts advised her to date boys her own age and suggested that she might be able to pursue Donnell once she was also an adult. When Samantha went on that Chessy and Anastasia had gone out of their way to remind her that she wasn't a real Dupree, Chelsea and Kat objected, declaring that the adoptee was as much a Dupree as they were.

Kat excitedly observed that Samantha was coming up on her one-year anniversary working with ChelseaKat. To commemorate it, she and Chelsea presented Samantha with a new purse that wasn't on the market yet and invited Samantha to name the item. Samantha was thrilled and gushed that she had never felt more included in the Dupree family. Kat beamed that Samantha didn't need a bag for that.

Jessica brought Tyrell back to her parents' beach house to resume playing chess. Tyrell remembered meeting Jessica for the first time and marveled that he'd never thought he'd be teaching her his favorite pastime. They started kissing, knocking over the chess pieces and eventually engaging in their second round of lovemaking. Afterwards, Jessica grinned that Tyrell learned quickly. He said he hoped that his burgeoning skill might convince her to stay in town instead of attending college on the other coast. Jessica jovially replied that it had rendered her not able to leave the room.

Ted dined with Eva at the country club and noticed how stressed out she was. Eva apologized for “bringing chaos”; it was just that she was stretched thin between working for the clinic and working for Ted, who hoped Leslie wasn't trying to pull Eva out of his employ. Answering no, Eva sighed that she just didn't want to let Derek down and couldn't understand why his death was hitting her so hard. Ted knew grief was new to Eva and relayed how he'd grappled with his brother's death and then Doug's; he recommended that Eva reach out to others who knew Derek and ease her hurt by sharing stories about him. Eva was shocked that Ted had once commiserated with Bill over his own losses.

Eva sought out Shanice at the hospital and got permission to ask her questions about Derek. They laughed over Shanice's recollection of Derek using a hockey stick as a crutch, and Eva was surprised to learn that Derek and Shanice had gone out on a few dates. Shanice said that being able to talk about Derek had made her grief easier, so Eva offered to lend an ear if Shanice needed another discussion.

Shanice saw Monica and hoped that her presence meant she had accepted the position of chief of staff. Monica was intrigued by the offer but felt settled in Texas; plus, she wanted to keep the patients she had in Houston. Naomi came by and told Monica how helpful she would be cleaning up Garland after Lia's involvement with the red market, smiling that Monica would be a great “palette cleanser.” But Naomi's expression darkened when she added that there were plenty of people who could use Monica's oncological expertise. Monica, who knew Naomi carried the BRCA gene mutation, exchanged glances with her. Later, Naomi rescheduled an appointment with Carlton.

Anita and Vernon returned from two romantic nights at the Bowman Hotel, laughing about how they'd once had to make up a Cousin Emerson to visit so they could sneak away while raising Nicole and Dani. The Duprees were ready to resume their frolicking until Nicole stepped off the mansion's elevator. Vernon chuckled that he and Anita still couldn't get any privacy decades later.

Talk turned to how Ted had recommended Nicole to replace Lia as chief of staff without her consent; Vernon stated that, together with Anita, they had shut that possibility down. Nicole liked the idea of oncologist Monica McCormick coming on board, and Vernon decided to pay Monica a visit to see if she'd reached a decision about his offer. Anita took the moment to have a “Ted talk” and asked Nicole why it seemed she and Ted had been making eyes at each other.

Nicole denied there had been “sexual tension” between her and her ex – it was just that there had been so many family events in a row, plus the first anniversary of her marriage where Ted hadn't been her husband. Anita learned that Nicole had experienced some fantasies about Ted and inquired what she was going to do about them. Nicole explained that she'd nearly confided in Ted that she'd been thinking of him, but Shanice had walked into the room. Nicole decided that Shanice had saved her from making a fool of herself, and she was okay with not knowing what Ted's reaction would have been. Anita brought up Carlton and Kial and wanted to know which man Nicole would be escorting to Martin's upcoming political fundraiser.

Ted visited with Martin, who poked fun at Smitty throwing him out of the house so he could concentrate on work. Recalling that he had sometimes made himself scarce to give Nicole room, Ted expressed confusion over how cold she had been of late. Martin spoke of the vibe he had picked up on between Ted and Nicole at the cotillion and wondered if it preceded an opening between them – and how did Shanice fit into things? Martin mused. As Ted contemplated his situation, Martin proposed that he not sacrifice what he had in the present for something he had in the past.

Though Ted kept feeling that he needed to know what Nicole had so urgently wanted to say when she had come to see him, he determined that there was no point in rehashing what he'd had with her after Martin reminded him that she was perfectly content dating “Mr. Plastic and Mr. Bones.” Afterwards, Ted visited Shanice at the nurses station and invited her to be his date for Martin's event. Shanice accepted. Martin went home and found that Smitty had submitted his first draft – leaving him in the mood for romance.

Vernon tracked down Monica and told her that her compassion – something the hospital needed – might have tipped the scales in Anita's recovery. Monica was tempted to accommodate Vernon, but she would only do so if she could sign on for one single year, as Shanice had suggested, and be able to keep doing her consulting work besides. Vernon was certain that the board would approve, and he shook Monica's hand.

Tune in tomorrow when Hayley and Randy recall how they ended up targeting Bill in the first place, Dani's memories aren't sweet, and Bill takes stock of his complicated love life.
