On Beyond the Gates, Kat was sure that no word from her family could be bad news for Anita. While she called Nicole, who had no update, Tomás ran into Bill, who informed the junior partner that the charges against Lynette had been dropped. Desperate for a distraction, Kat invited Tomás to tell her about the case: Tomás relayed how odd it had been that all of Lynette's background checks had come up nearly empty. Kat deduced that Lynette had to be hiding something – perhaps she had a different identity.

Tomás got confirmation from Kat that Bill suddenly getting the case dismissed after Hayley had asked him to was shady. Admitting that he felt played, Kat's encouragement convinced Tomás that he wanted the full story on Lynette.

I wanna sex you up

Hayley and Lynette clinked glasses at Uptown, with Lynette euphoric that Bill had gotten her embezzlement case dismissed. Lynette concurred that Hayley had come through for her, but shocked her friend when she said she'd been sleeping with Randy. When Lynette wondered if the previously disdainful Randy had an ulterior motive, Hayley figured her cousin was just horny. The women laughed about scams they had pulled in the past, but Hayley confided that meeting Bill had made her realize that there was more to life than “the con.”

Still affected by Anita's decline, Bill had Caroline bring him his will, which he wanted to update. After Bill sent a text to Dani, Hayley arrived and saw that Bill was down; Bill decided to tell Hayley about Anita's worsening condition and his concerns about how Chelsea and Naomi would take it if their beloved grandmother died. After promising Bill her support, Hayley tried not to react when Bill announced that he'd been having second thoughts about bringing another child into the world, between the stroke he'd had, the dicey blood test results he had gotten, and Dani carrying the cancer-causing BRCA gene variant. Hayley assured her husband that they could revisit the subject of children if and when Bill was ready, but smiled to herself as Bill hugged her.

Randy came to Uptown to see Lynette, who raised an eyebrow when Randy talked about how much they “fit.” Lynette asked point-blank if Randy was trying to pull something on her, considering his one-eighty towards her; Randy said that he had urges, plus he'd been lonely. When Lynette didn't buy it and threatened to make Randy pay if she found out he was messing with her, Randy told Lynette there was something about her that made him want to reconnect with her sexually and that no one was out to get her. Lynette agreed to another bed romp.

Later, Hayley grinned at Randy that she no longer had to “push out a big-ass baby.” When Randy heard that Lynette had told Hayley about them fooling around despite claiming she hadn't, he and Hayley realized that Lynette was indeed a threat to them.

I believe the children are our future

In Anita's hospital room, Vernon was glad to hear about Monica's pep talk and that the meds were bringing Anita's pain level down, but he was horrified when his wife declared that she was stopping her chemotherapy and enacting a do-not-resuscitate order. Nothing Vernon said could sway Anita from choosing quality of life over quantity; she wanted to go out on her own terms. Anita ordered Vernon to bring their daughters in so they could witness her signing the document.

At the nurses' station, Ted wondered about Anita's status, but Shanice reminded him that she was ethically bound to not reveal that information, since Ted was no longer a family member. Afterwards, Anita summoned Ted to her bedside and proclaimed that he was “forever family,” given that he was the father of her grandchildren. As Ted expressed surprise that Kat had moved into the Dupree mansion, Anita advised Ted to be more proactive with his children while he still had time – making Eva feel included was one thing, but there was still Kat and Martin to think about. Ted solemnly nodded.

Don't leave me this way

Nicole and Dani were stunned when Vernon reported that Anita seemed to have lost the will to live. The sisters couldn't believe that Anita wanted to sign a DNR and ambushed their mother's room, with Nicole in disbelief that Anita was actively trying to shorten her life and going on some kind of “farewell life tour.” Dani suggested that Anita talk to cancer survivors to help her see that there was another side for her to get to, but Anita remained stubborn. Nicole said that the cancer would spread if Anita stopped the chemo.

Vernon cried that Anita was making a colossal mistake, and when Anita reminded Nicole that she had promised to take her place as the leader of the family, Nicole argued that she'd only made that agreement if Anita's treatment didn't work, not if Anita chose to give up on it. Anita knew that Nicole wouldn't let the family down just because she wasn't getting her way, but Dani spat that it was Anita who was being selfish.

Trying another tack, Dani calmed down and called up Chelsea's upcoming wedding, which she knew Anita would want to be there for, plus Samantha coming out as a debutante. Nicole added that Tyrell would soon be graduating and going to college; Dani bragged about the anniversary party that she and Andre were planning. Vernon chimed in that there were still so many chapters left in “the Book of Dupree”...but Anita demanded that he hand over the DNR. Dani took the pen so she couldn't sign it.

Anita was resolute, and Vernon was in tears as she got the pen from Dani and made ready to endorse the document. But suddenly...Anita tore it up, and her loved ones nearly collapsed in relief. Vernon thanked Anita for not giving up and quietly sent an acknowledgement to the heavens as well.

Bill was surprised to find Dani at his office; she had come to tell Bill that his former mother-in-law was doing better, and to share the difficulty she'd just been through about the DNR. Bill was grateful that Anita had finally listened to her husband and children, yet also spoke of his own “existential crisis”; Dani was amazed to hear that Hayley had been all right about putting off plans to have a baby with Bill.

Ted left a message for Martin, telling his son that they were long overdue for a catch-up. Then, he offered to take Shanice away on a vacation, but she wanted to visit Miami instead of going camping as Ted was suggesting. Nicole came upon them and chuckled that Ted was still trying to set up the outdoor excursion he couldn't get her to consent to. Both Shanice and Ted shared Nicole's peace of mind that Anita had opted not to sign the DNR after all.

Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.
