Here's what went down on the Thursday, May 21, 2026, episode of Beyond the Gates when Donnell channelled Deanna, Lynette's name was once again on people's lips, and Derek was mourned.

What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Jacob videotaped Grayson's statement about what had happened at the warehouse and how Derek had gotten shot. Though his recollection was slightly blurry, Grayson reasoned that Derek had jumped in front of the bullet meant for Jacob – and he felt terrible that Derek was dead because of him. Jacob hypothesized that, with Ren having decided to kill Grayson, they had all walked into a trap anyway.

While being led through the station, Ren smirked to Jacob that he was a peon in the blood plasma ring and that the organization ran deep. He was also certain that he'd be able to cut a deal and avoid prison – because he knew who The Impaler was. Jacob didn't want to have to use Ren as a source and hoped that information from Grayson and Lia could help him nab the crime boss.

Handcuffed to her hospital bed, Lia was visited by a dismayed Marcel, who had considered her a friend. He said that Lia should have come to him when she'd gotten herself into trouble – and that it wasn't too late for him to help her. Aware that Marcel wanted intel on the inner workings of the ring, Lia replied that she'd only share what she knew if an attorney was present.

Then, Shanice came by to check on her patient, but didn't want to hear any of Lia's explanations, even after Lia swore that she'd only become involved in the syndicate because of her retirement fund being stolen. Shanice snapped that Lia had gotten her friend killed, and for that, she could rot in hell.

Lia was not pleased to see Jacob in her room afterwards; she reiterated what she'd told Marcel about not revealing any knowledge of the ring without a lawyer at her side. Jacob notified her that Grayson was going to testify against her, which would likely result in her serving a long jail sentence. However, Jacob continued, she could be given immunity just as Grayson had – if she led the department to The Impaler. Jacob took Lia's resistance as not wanting to help, but she shrugged that she honestly didn't even know who The Impaler was.

Elon arrived at the casino to question Joey, convinced that Joey had been lying about being tied to the ring because of having found Randy skulking around the warehouse. When Joey couldn't produce a viable alibi for himself, Elon promised that Joey would “never see the light of day” again should he learn that he was part of the syndicate. Joey repeatedly insisted that he wasn't. Later, Marcel appeared; Joey groused that his interrogation was continuing, but Marcel was there to kick himself for having missed Lia's culpability despite his years of experience as a detective. It was time to retire, he decided – but Joey countered that Marcel was still an essential part of his operation and talked him into staying on the force.

Once alone, Joey called Randy to deliver two messages: one, to lay low, and two, to get word to The Impaler to stop causing trouble so close to his turf. “Enough is enough,” Joey frowned.

At the country club, Donnell met with Vanessa; after a brief discussion about the cotillion, Donnell brought up news of the warehouse shooting and wondered if it had had something to do with Joey. Vanessa was stunned, given Donnell's previous lighter attitude about Joey, but Donnell had done some thinking and felt it suspicious that Joey had funneled so much money into the establishment of the clinic, a prime source for blood plasma. Vanessa defended Joey, declaring he only picked on people his own size, and hoped that Deanna wasn't finally poisoning Donnell's mind against Joey. Donnell remained gruff and snorted “Whatever” when Vanessa kept proclaiming Joey's innocence.

Joey was surprised to see Donnell entering the back room of the Lakeview, where Donnell stoically returned Joey's cufflinks. Donnell sidestepped Joey's friendliness and announced that he'd begun having second thoughts about her mother's boyfriend, scoffing when Joey seemed to define his questionable business practices as “imperfections.” “You almost had me,” Donnell said, regretting having given Joey a chance and deciding that Deanna had been right about him after all.

It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday

Ashley kept staring at photos of Derek while Naomi helplessly tried to console her. When Naomi gently said that Ashley needed to eat and otherwise take care of herself, Ashley sighed that there was no point, since everyone ended up the same eventually anyway. She couldn't help feeling as though she'd lost the love of her life, despite her and Derek having broken up months before. Naomi shared Ashley's happy memories of them going out on double dates with Jacob and Derek, respectively – though Ashley couldn't understand how such moments had led to Derek's secrets. Conversely, Ashley remembered how being a control freak had caused her to treat Derek terribly, for which she lambasted herself.

As Ashley cried that she had simply dumped Derek instead of letting him explain why he had lied about being able to walk, Naomi tried to let her best friend know that there was no point in regret – but Ashley went on that Derek would be alive had she not rejected his marriage proposal, which had resulted his bike accident, subsequent paralysis, starting at the clinic, and following Grayson to his doom. Naomi was barely able to convince Ashley to take a shower, after which she placed an urgent call to Jan.

Ashley was surprised to find her mother waiting for her and acknowledged that Naomi had lost Derek as well, not just her. Naomi left Ashley with Jan, who said that she still had a soft spot for Derek after all was said and done. The Morgans laughed about the awful chair Derek was enamored of and had moved into the apartment. Ashley informed Jan that she had called Derek's parents to deliver the news; Jan was sure they were devastated. Ashley again berated herself for being so controlling with Derek and was beginning to spiral when Grayson showed up on the door with flowers.

Bill and Tomás both read about the shooting, with Bill certain that Jacob had been undercover rather than being away for months getting “specialized training.” The conversation segued from the plasma operation being disbanded to Lia having gotten in over her head in it because of Lynette stealing her retirement savings. Kat overheard as she approached Bill's office from the hallway, then barged in on the discussion, loudly hoping that Bill wasn't planning on representing Lia.

Tomás and Kat speculated that Lynette might have hurried out of town for fear that Lia would sic the syndicate's goons on her for making off with her money. Bill reminded Kat not to overstep, adding that they may never know why Lynette left D.C.

Afterwards, Naomi came by Bill's office, needing to work to distract herself from Derek's death and Ashley's resulting grief – not to mention her own. Bill thought that perhaps Naomi was also feeling a need to be around family...and she didn't disagree.

Vanessa was still at the country club and happened to be sitting at the bar when Tomás and Kat took a table and began discussing Lynette, which made Vanessa's ears prick up. It was Kat's opinion that Jacob should be told about the possibility of Lia having had Lynette killed as revenge for plundering her, but Tomás teased that Kat was taking her love of crime podcasts too seriously. As Kat swore by the accuracy of her intuition, Vanessa sat stony-faced, as if she had come to a terrible realization.

Tune in tomorrow when Ted works with the Duprees to put out a fire, Joey has more to answer for, and a McBride encounters a familiar face.
