Here's what went down Friday, May 22, 2026, on Beyond the Gates when the truth did not set Grayson free, Joey danced around Donnell, and Kat emerged as a fount of wisdom.
What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Shanice was under pressure working to transfer patients to another hospital, which hung up on her. After she blew off Ted's attempt to comfort her, he and Nicole noted that Shanice was keeping busy in an attempt to deal with Derek's death. Nicole hesitantly okayed Ted's request to get Shanice to open up about how she was really doing.
Then, Ted met with the Duprees, who were board members at Garland Memorial, to discuss bringing in a new chief of staff to replace the disgraced Lia – especially since her actions had damaged the hospital's reputation. Anita thought that oncologist Monica McCormick – Shanice's aunt, who had consulted on Anita's case – would be the perfect choice. Yet Ted recommended Nicole, as the staff already trusted her, and morale could only be bolstered by not having to get used to someone new.
Both Vernon and Anita wondered if Ted was proposing Nicole as a way of getting back into her good graces, but Ted replied that he had given up hoping for a reconciliation long ago – he just felt Nicole was better suited for the position. The Duprees advised Ted to get Nicole's take on the move before approaching the board; he agreed.
Nicole got Shanice to slow down long enough for a chat. With Nicole's urging, Shanice admitted that she was “a hot chaotic mess” and that she couldn't understand why she was go gutted by Derek's loss, as they hadn't been particularly close. Nicole urged Shanice to take some time off, since she wouldn't be any good to her patients while needing care herself. Shanice reluctantly concurred and sighed that at least Derek had died doing the very thing he loved – saving lives.

In Fairmont Crest, Andre got an assignment to feature Samantha and the other 2026 Barrington County debs in Essence magazine, but Dani couldn't understand why he wasn't excited about the coup. Andre fretted that he'd been thinking about Derek, who hadn't been able to stand the sight of him because of him, hovering around Ashley, even though she and Derek had already been in a relationship. When Andre suggested that Derek might still be alive if he had left him and Ashley alone – and therefore prevented Ashley's involvement with Grayson – Dani beseeched Andre not to punish himself. She reasoned that Ashley and Derek had had their own issues and used the example of her blaming Hayley for her split from Bill to convince Andre that no amount of interference from him would have mattered if Derek and Ashley had been solid. Andre decided that he needed to see Ashley and asked Dani to come along.
When Ashley found Grayson on her doorstep, she turned away, but Jan was intrigued to finally meet Ashley's new boyfriend. Grayson's caring had Jan in tears, since it reminded her of Derek; Jan apologized for her inappropriateness when she confessed that she had always hoped that Derek would still end up her son-in-law. Grayson asked for privacy; after Jan left, Ashley didn't want to play any more of his “BS game.” However, when Grayson wanted to follow through on telling Ashley the whole truth about what had been going on with him, she grudgingly listened.
Grayson described how Lia had reached out to him after learning that he was in dire financial straits, working to get his mother proper medical care for her Parkinson's. Lia had gotten Grayson a shift at an outside concierge service – which had been legitimate – but soon she offered him a way to make even more money. Grayson hadn't realized he was into anything illegal until it was too late; he couldn't go to the police since the organization had started threatening his mom. When Grayson called Ashley “Ash,” she raged, yelling at him not to use Derek's nickname for her – and besides, Grayson's story was nothing but excuses. He was the reason that Derek was dead, and there was nothing left for them to say.
Ashley asked Grayson to go, but he said he had promised Jan he wouldn't leave her alone. Just then, Andre and Dani knocked on the door; with Grayson gone, Dani asked Ashley about him. Hearing that Ashley had been seeing Grayson until being disillusioned by him, Dani counseled her not to let him take up any more space with her. Andre pointed out that Derek's impact on everybody had been real, and Ashley allowed Dani to embrace her.
I think it's going to rain today

In the Lakeview back room, Donnell had come to the opinion that Deanna had been right about Joey playing him and Vanessa. The previous night's shooting had also made Donnell wonder if Joey had been connected to it. Joey responded that Donnell was just looking for conspiracies; Donnell granted that Joey wouldn't hurt Vanessa on purpose, but claimed that the casino was a front for the other nefarious activities he had read about online. Joey decried the rumors and was willing to confide to Donnell how, despite his volatile relationship with his father, he had learned from him how to be a self-made man – his businesses were on the up-and-up.
Donnell believed Joey when he said he loved Vanessa, but he couldn't ignore Deanna's instincts, which were usually accurate. Plus, Deanna's protestations had gotten Donnell thinking about the night of Doug's death, and he wanted to again hear from Joey that he'd had nothing to do with it.
Mind playing tricks on me

At the country club, Vanessa overheard Kat's theory that Lia had had Lynette killed as revenge for siphoning everything out of her retirement fund, but agreed with Tomás that Kat was reaching. Kat was still resolute that everything lined up, though Tomás reminded her that Lynette had been cleared of any wrongdoing. He tried to change the subject to the cotillion, which had Vanessa saying that everything had gone well until Deanna had come in behaving as if she'd been raised by wolves. Kat sheepishly indicated that Deanna was now standing right behind Vanessa.
Deanna scoffed that she had come to apologize for her behavior, only to find her mother talking smack about her. When Deanna went on about how Vanessa had never believed her, Vanessa stopped her building tirade cold. Vanessa growled that she had done everything she could to reach out and connect with Deanna, yet Deanna had ignored her – and therefore, she would not be Deanna's audience in another public display. After Vanessa stormed out, Kat hinted for Tomás to leave and invited Deanna to chat with her.
Kat told Deanna that she well understood what it was like to watch a family fall apart, as Deanna had. Deanna sniffed that Joey had brainwashed Donnell and had Vanessa giggling like she was a 25-year-old. Kat relayed that, despite having been right about Eva, she had become the villain with her loved ones by constantly trying to call Eva out. All that had done was push everyone away, and Deanna was at risk of pushing Vanessa away – besides, if Joey did end up hurting Vanessa, she would need Deanna more than ever. Deanna thanked Kat for giving her something to think about. Kat realized the talk had provided her with a reason to contemplate.
Vanessa went to Nicole, who asked her if being with Joey was really worth all the friction it was causing with her children. Nicole questioned the timing of the romance and reiterated that Deanna and Donnell had lost their father, prompting Vanessa to insist that she was still grieving Doug as well, even if it didn't seem like it on the surface. When Vanessa declared that Deanna was being unreasonable, Nicole wanted her to at least take into account what it was she was asking her kids to accept by being in a relationship with Joey.
Deanna was walking through a hallway at the country club when suddenly she heard a familiar voice calling her name. She turned around...and brightened when she saw Doug standing there.
Tune in next week when Leslie continues to know what time it is with Hayley, Nicole has a bad reaction to Ted recommending her for chief of staff, and Tyrell wants to talk about sex.
Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.
