On Beyond the Gates, Donnell told Joey that he had a hard time ignoring Deanna's usually sharp instincts, and that he had to again wonder if Joey had had anything to do with Doug's death. Joey reminded Donnell that his bartender had vouched for Doug's level of inebriation and that the CSI had verified the veracity of his security footage of Doug, but Donnell scoffed that he could make his own deepfake video in minutes. Also, Donnell said, he had read about Joey never being held accountable and suggested that he got other people to do his dirty deeds.

Joey refused to take responsibility for Doug when Donnell labeled him an opportunist for letting Doug drink and gamble in his casino when the man clearly had dependencies on both; Joey maintained that he had a business to run, and that, while he didn't exactly lose sleep over Doug's death, he was doing his best to support Vanessa as she grappled with his loss. Donnell came around and thanked Joey for telling him the truth.

Deanna was thrilled to find Doug in the country club hallway and hugged him. Doug warned Deanna that she had been right about Joey – he was gaslighting Vanessa and Donnell, and he beseeched Deanna to get Joey away from them. “Doug” informed his daughter, "Joey is the reason I'm dead." Deanna felt that Joey breaking Vanessa's heart would be “karmic retribution,” but “Doug” wanted his “perfect” Deanna to show more grace; he also reiterated that it was up to Deanna to keep Donnell and Vanessa safe. The girl shielded “Doug” as a club staffer walked by, but when Deanna turned around, “Doug” was gone.

Donnell met with Deanna at the country club, upsetting her by relaying that he once again felt better about Joey, having just come from interrogating him. When Donnell bluntly said that they would never see Doug again, Deanna replied, “Maybe you won't,” covering by adding that she would never trust Joey. Donnell threw his hands up and left, after which Deanna returned to the hallway and begged “Doug” to reappear, crying that no one else understood her.

Why just be friends

Nicole questioned Donnell's acceptance of Joey, wondering if he wasn't just telling Vanessa what she wanted to hear. When Nicole asked if Vanessa ultimately foresaw Joey filling a parental role for Donnell and Deanna, Vanessa admitted that she didn't know what the future held and that she and Joey hadn't thought ahead that far. Still, she was hopeful that Joey and her kids could at least have a cordial relationship one day – and then changed the subject by asking if Nicole had had any more fantasies about Ted. Nicole reported that they had tapered off, with Vanessa giggling that Carlton had provided Nicole “literal sexual healing.” As Vanessa began making a case for Carlton, who seemed to have a more caring relationship with Nicole, Kial texted Nicole and wanted to come over. The women decided that the jury for Nicole's “#1” was still out.

Kial arrived, having just seen his grown sons, Noah and Connor. He described how he hadn't been particularly supportive of Noah's musical ambitions, wanting him to establish a backup career, until his departed ex-wife, Sarah, had gotten him to let their boys follow their own paths. Nicole didn't deny it when Kial somehow fathomed that Nicole was fishing to know if he ever fantasized about Sarah, which he didn't; her passing had taught him to live in the moment. After Nicole sheepishly confided that she'd had a vision of Ted while in bed with Carlton, Kial let it roll off and instead asked if he could stay the night, since he and Nicole both had early mornings and work to finish up before bed. Nicole allowed it, and she and Kial cuddled on the couch with their tablets.

Vanessa went to Joey at the casino; when she saw his cufflinks on the poker table, she realized Donnell had been there. Joey confirmed that Donnell had given him the third degree, but Vanessa was certain that once her twins truly got to know Joey, they'd love him as much as she did. Joey didn't look so sure.

Hayley met with Randy, who was upset that his cousin seemed more concerned that his near arrest would have prevented him from helping her further than she was for his actual welfare. Randy seemed hurt by Hayley's half-hearted denial and told her to stick to the plan when she announced that she had upped Bill's poison doses again. Hayley expressed her impatience, tired that nothing was happening to “Bill's built-like-a-tank ass.” She wanted to finally inherit Bill's money and be sipping drinks in the tropics somewhere.

Bill was in his office working when his hand began to shake. He hid it from Tomás, who entered with an update concerning Lynette: a barista Lynette had become keen on had spoken of how excited she'd been to stay in D.C. and move into her penthouse, feeling that Lynette's sudden disappearance was odd. Bill considered the intel insignificant and became annoyed when Tomás slipped that Kat had obtained it, since he had told Kat not to interfere. Tomás remembered that Bill had had his own suspicions about Lynette, but Bill grumbled that neither Tomás nor Keegan had come up with any tangible evidence about Lynette's whereabouts or wrongdoing. Therefore, Bill was cancelling the investigation.

Hayley found Bill alone later and offered him a cup of coffee. He asked for water instead, remarking that he was jittery enough, but Hayley talked him into a short drink of scotch instead, producing the poison bottle from her bosom and liberally dropping the toxin in the liquor. Hayley was pleased when Bill took a healthy sip from his glass.

Leslie was sharing a meal with Eva, upset that Lia – who hadn't even been a good crook – had tarnished the name of “her” clinic, forcing her to do damage control. Eva was dismayed that Leslie was being so dismissive about Derek's death, especially after Leslie cavalierly offered to send “little Ashley” some flowers. Leslie was more focused on finding a manager to replace Derek, and she again wanted Eva to fill his shoes. Eva didn't hide the fact that she didn't want to work for her mother, but, because Eva believed in the clinic, she agreed to help on a temporary basis – just not until she talked to her current employer, Ted, whom Eva refused to walk out on completely.

Ted and Kat were discussing the events of the cotillion at Orphey Gene's, where Kat mused that neither Ted nor Nicole had come to the gala with dates – plus, Ted had been making eyes at Nicole the whole time. Ted wouldn't speak for Nicole's intentions, though he divulged that he hadn't asked Shanice to the ball because she wasn't very fond of him at the moment. Kat groaned when Ted explained how Shanice had seen him holding Leslie's hand in an effort to comfort her after Anita's tirade. She knew that Leslie would interpret Ted's compassion as “a Jumbotron proposal.”

When Eva walked into the diner needing to talk to Ted, Kat made her usual insulting asides about her half-sister – yet, after Eva congratulated Kat for her part in Samantha winning Platinum Deb, Kat softened, actually thanked Eva, and complimented the job Eva had done on Samantha's hair.

Ted was surprised when Eva asked to cut her hours at his facility in half – and even more surprised that she wanted to devote those hours to working with Leslie. Eva clarified that she was doing it in memory of Derek after the dedication he had put into the clinic, plus Eva was sure that her taking over would only be temporary until she and Leslie found another full-time manager. Ted okayed Eva's shift reduction.

Kat met Tomás at the country club, where he complained about Bill chewing him out for letting her work on the Lynette investigation again when Bill had forbad it. Though Kat didn't think it mattered who amassed the information as long as it was accurate, Tomás conceded that he and Kat had come up with nothing but theories. And, if they kept digging into Lynette together, Tomás added, it could put his job with Bill's firm at risk. While Tomás didn't tell Kat to stop probing Lynette outright, he did say that he wanted no part of any effort she might make concerning the woman.

Leslie found Randy at Uptown and made some leering comments about him before acknowledging that she had been unable to reach Joey. After Randy reasoned that Joey was ignoring her phone calls, Leslie became more sincere and shared her concern that Joey might pull his financial support from the clinic if he determined that Leslie was somehow to blame for allowing the blood plasma ring to infiltrate it. Randy refused Leslie's offer of passing along anything she learned that might negatively affect Joey in exchange for his take on Joey's attitude towards her, telling Leslie that he had already “used up [his] quota for crazy women.”

Tune in tomorrow when Shanice and Ted work things out – or not, Tyrell may need to binge-watch The Facts of Life, and Jan gets some information via Mona.
