On Beyond the Gates, Tyrell came downstairs for breakfast, sheepishly expecting to be punished for leaving the cotillion with Jessica without a word to anyone. Martin opined that Tyrell knowing his dads were disappointed in him was punishment enough. Samantha joined them, wearing her sash and carrying her tiara, ahead of being photographed as a debutante. She added that, as a volunteer at the clinic, she was under orders from Leslie not to talk about what had happened to Derek unless Leslie was present. When Samantha asked Smitty not to include the clinic in his article about the blood plasma ring, Smitty said he had to be truthful but would be sure not to tarnish the facility.

Once alone, Martin told Smitty that he was very upset with him. While he was proud of Smitty's work in busting the plasma syndicate, he lamented that it could have brought Smitty near the warehouse when shots were being fired. After the kids returned, Smitty told them – and Martin – that he was sorry that he had allowed his investigation to reduce the amount of time he'd spent with them. Then, while everyone headed out, Tyrell stopped Martin, wanting to ask him about sex.

Tyrell admitted that he and Jessica had made love for the first time, which didn't surprise Martin; he deemed Tyrell an adult and just hoped that Tyrell had used protection. The teen was dismayed because of how nervous he had been during the act and how, because of it, he hadn't emerged from it feeling like a man. Martin explained that he'd probably been more nervous than Tyrell had been...because his first time had also been with a girl. The congressman explained that there was still too much of a stigma around homosexuality when he was a teen for him to be authentic; therefore, he'd dated a girl and lost his virginity to her because he thought it had been expected. Tyrell was fascinated to hear Martin had been with a woman, though Martin advised Tyrell not to buy into the stereotype of what having sex for the first time was supposed to be; the experience wasn't meant to be any kind of standard. Hearing that Martin had felt an immediate connection to Smitty, Tyrell decided that Jessica was “the one.”

Samantha met Jessica at the country club, winking that she knew that she and Tyrell had “hooked up.” Jessica noted that her time with Tyrell had been worth getting in trouble with her parents, but she was concerned about how hard Tyrell was going to have it while they were each away at college on different coasts. After Samantha felt that Jessica had a decision to make, Jessica went to Tyrell and told the crestfallen boy that they could have a whirlwind summer, but that they should probably break up when fall came. Jessica worried that she'd end up hurting Tyrell more by continuing in a long-distance relationship with him.

Good as hell

At the country club, Ted thanked Shanice for having breakfast with him. Shanice admitted that she'd had reservations about accepting his invitation, especially after he had gone to her Aunt Monica for help in reconnecting with her. But Derek's death had hit her hard, she went on, and motivated her to re-evaluate her life and where she was going. Ted was thrilled when Shanice said she didn't want to give him up, and he apologized for his past always making an appearance...

...which was the exact moment Leslie arrived. When Leslie began to make disparaging comments about Shanice, Ted ordered her not to approach him again until there was something about Eva they needed to discuss. Leslie slinked away, and Shanice was so wowed by his forcefulness with Leslie that she arranged to have a “makeup sex marathon” with him over the weekend.

In the club foyer, Leslie called Marcel on business, stating that Joey was blaming her for the clinic being tied to the blood plasma ring. She wanted any information he might have on that subject; after hanging up, she saw an article announcing a press conference that was about to happen at the hospital and quickly took off.

Grayson found Jacob at the police station, conveying how he had just met with the prosecutor. He couldn't believe that he was walking free while Lia was behind bars, but Jacob insisted that Grayson tackling the shooter at the warehouse had helped his bid for immunity. Grayson was glad not to be serving time, but felt that his sentence was the fact that Ashley couldn't stand to be in the same room with him. Jacob encouraged Grayson to give Ashley space, after which Grayson thanked Elon for his part in keeping his connection to the syndicate out of the public record. Elon could see that Grayson was trying to atone for his mistakes.

Elon then outlined for Jacob the imminent Garland Memorial press conference and the fact that he and Ted would tell reporters how only Lia was at fault for bringing the red market in there. Jacob was still perturbed that they couldn't issue a statement saying The Impaler was in custody, but Elon was certain that that day was coming.

Naomi stopped in to see Ashley, who continued to mourn Derek. She introduced Ashley to the paper plane contest that Bill had taught her to play as a means of distraction when she used to get anxious about school tests. After seeing that Ashley was a little better, Naomi joined Jacob at the hospital and proposed they spend time together that evening, but Jacob seemed preoccupied and wanted to get more work done...though he did take the hand Naomi offered once the press conference started at the nurses station.

Smitty and other reporters recorded Elon as he began describing how Lia had allowed plasma to be stolen from Garland and how she and other associates had been incarcerated. Ted stepped up and assured everyone that the hospital would be implementing new security protocols. But Leslie, who was in attendance, made her way to the podium and burst into tears about the clinic losing someone as honest and diligent as Derek. During her clear act, she made a point of mentioning that the clinic was in no way connected to the ring's wrongdoing – then she threw herself into Ted's arms, sobbing, as Shanice watched.

After the presser, Ted flamed Leslie for her theatrics, knowing full well that she had publicly used the death of Derek, someone she highly disliked, to get revenge on Shanice for Ted's earlier defense of her. Leslie blew off the moment as damage control, and Ted later asked Smitty not to quote anything Leslie had said. Smitty smiled that pretty much everything that came out of Leslie's mouth was fiction. Naomi approached Elon, concerned that Jacob's distance might indicate that his mental health had been affected by months of undercover work and Derek's death. Elon promised to keep an eye on Jacob and get him any help he needed.

Mona hung out with Jan at Orphey Gene's, reminiscing about Derek, but when Mona declined to order her usual sweet treat, Jan sensed that something was wrong. Jan listened as Mona revealed that she had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes – a condition Black women in particular were more susceptible to. Talk turned to Grayson and Jan's relief that he was supporting Ashley in her time of need, which was why Jan was shocked to see Grayson entering the diner when she assumed he was with Ashley. Grayson let Jan continue to believe that he and Ashley were together, only saying that Ashley had seemed like she needed space. Jan knew that Ashley had a tendency to push people away and urged Grayson to hold fast with her.

Jan passed Leslie on the way out; Leslie saw Grayson and blamed him for bringing shame to her clinic, working as Lia's puppet. But then Grayson took a call from a creditor, and Leslie heard him trying to assure them that he'd have their money soon. Leslie softened, understanding what it was like to get calls from bill collectors. When Grayson sighed that he couldn't work because the hospital lab was closed for the duration of the ring-related police investigation, Leslie offered him a position at the clinic, pending Eva's approval and the outcome of the inquiry. Grayson was grateful to have something to be hopeful about after everything he'd been through.

Ashley was stunned when Derek's father, Brian Baldwin, showed up on her door; she hugged him tightly and learned that he had come to D.C. to collect Derek's remains ahead of a funeral that would be held in Derek's hometown. Brian was resentful that Derek had died because of Jacob, even after Ashley explained that Jacob wasn't some random police officer – he had been Derek's best friend. After Brian decided that the connection made things worse, Ashley pivoted and asked about Melody, Derek's mother. Brian presented Ashley with the first medal of honor Derek had been awarded and the silly badge he'd been given for rescuing a woman's cat, which made Ashley laugh.

Next, Shanice visited Ashley, wanting to be sure she was eating. The two giggled about the woman who had brought her saved kitty to see Derek, but Ashley soon berated herself for not seeing what a great guy Derek had been, and for being so hard on him in regard to him lying about his paralysis. Shanice reminded Ashley that, good a man as Derek was, he'd still done Ashley wrong. When Shanice heard that Derek's memorial wouldn't be in the DMV, she suggested that she and Ashley throw him one themselves, and Ashley was all in.

Brian approached Jacob at the police station and refused to shake Jacob's hand, holding him responsible for his son's death. When Jacob learned that Derek's body hadn't been released because it was part of a homicide investigation, he promised Mr. Baldwin to do what he could so that Derek could go home. After Brian grudgingly gave Jacob his contact information, he walked out of the station, barely listening as Jacob pleaded with the man to understand that Derek had been his best friend and had died saving him.
