What happened on Beyond the Gates
On Beyond the Gates, Dani and Vanessa competed to hire Rick, for Dupree-Curtis and Heart Attach, respectively, but Rick wasn't interested. Finally out in public with Joey for New Year's, the casino owner told Vanessa that he loved her. Eva once again had to slow Izaiah down when he slipped and referred to her as his girlfriend.
Leslie approached Joey to procure funding from him for the free clinic she wanted to establish; he wasn't particularly interested but heard Leslie out anyway, deeming her more involved with the project as a means to gain respect from the Duprees that because of the project itself. Vanessa agreed with Leslie that the medical center would also give Joey credibility.
After seeing Ted talking amicably to Shanice, Leslie shined Shanice on and requested that Ted take on a role in one of the clinic's leading committees. Ted refused and also turned down Leslie's New Year's invite, instead running into Shanice at Orphey Gene's. Shanice endorsed Ted's desire to move out of the hotel and get his own place in 2026, and, at midnight, they shared their first kiss.
Chelsea arranged for Madison's favorite R&B artist Kenny Lattimore, whose Uptown audience included Ashley, Derek, Naomi, Jacob, Kat, and Tomás.
Vernon accompanied Anita to a doctor's appointment in which it was explained to her that the hospital would be installing a port in her chest, through which she would be able to receive the medicine that came with chemotherapy. Despite learning that Anita was to have the port put in the next day, January 1, the Duprees decided it was time that the family knew of Anita's diagnosis.
The family reacted in horror for Anita, but the matriarch stressed how important it was that Nicole and Dani get tested for the cancer-causing BRCA gene; if she'd passed the mutation down to her daughters, it would mean that Naomi, Chelsea, Kat, and even Martin ran the risk of having inherited it. Because Dani wanted to talk to Bill first so they could approach their daughters with the news together, Chelsea and Naomi overheard Anita discussing the cancer with Vernon and found out from their grandmother instead.
While her sibling and cousins all readily agreed to get screened for BRCA, Kat adamantly refused to take the test; Ted told her worried loved ones that they couldn't force Kat to have it done and expressed the hope that she would come around to changing her mind on her own.

Smitty wanted to reach out to a distinguished cancer foundation to give Anita more options – and wear down Kat's resolve. Kat got drunk at Uptown; while she finally explained to Tomás about her grandmother's tumor, she remained silent about possibly carrying the BRCA gene. Bill gave advice to Anita based on his recent experience with having had a stroke – yet wouldn't tell Hayley what Dani had come to see him about. For her part, Hayley had eavesdropped on the conversation; when Bill “revealed” that Anita had cancer, a “sympathetic” Hayley pretended it was her first time hearing about it.
