Beyond the Gates actor Maurice P. Kerry, who plays morally-challenged Randy Parker, is opening up about some real-life hardships. The former real-life military man spent a period of time homeless after he returned from overseas duty.

Beyond the Gates, Maurice P. Kerry speaks out on homelessness

Kerry recently appeared on the podcast We’re Out of Time, hosted by Richard Taite, who shared with Kerry that he, too, has experienced homelessness. Kerry recalls returning home on October 14, 2005, and living in a blue Chevy 2003 Malibu, which he says did not even belong to him.

"It belonged to another Marine who let me borrow his car just to drive around," revealed the Beyond the Gates actor. "He had no idea that I was gonna be using that as a base of operations for the next year. He had no clue."

Perry was living in Southern California at the time, and his family was back in Atlanta. "I was still in San Diego, trying to figure it out, trying to make something work," the actor says. "I was also going through a divorce at the time, you know, with that whole situation. What I would do from time to time was...I would find a young lady who was sympathetic to my situation."

Perry was looking for a helping hand, though, not a handout. He says he'd ask if he could use someone's couch in exchange for cleaning and cooking. "I'll do whatever," he shared. The Marine was looking for a place to stay, and he says he's still in touch with one of the women who lent him a helping hand. "I'm probably gonna see her in May," Perry adds. "I just want to tell her 'thank you' because I probably wouldn't be here without her."

As a Marine, Perry served during Operation Iraqi Freedom II, which spanned from early 2004 to 2005.

Randy Parker's a complex character

In addition to his role on Beyond the Gates, Perry is known for appearing opposite Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder) in The First Lady. He's also worked with actors Morgan Freeman (Gunner; The Dark Knight) and Chris Meloni (Law & Order: Organized Crime).

Randy is up to all sorts of nefarious deeds on BTG. He helped Hayley (Marquita Goings) fake her miscarriage so that her unsuspecting husband, Bill Hamilton (Timon Kyle Durrett), believed that Hayley was carrying his child. How far will Randy and Hayley go to get their hands on the Hamilton fortune?

Quite possibly, pretty far! Randy's often motivated by money. While he was pals with Vanessa's (Lauren Buglioli) late husband, Doug McBride (Jason Graham), Randy ultimately set Doug up to fail at the gambling table, costing him a lot of money.
