Diane dreamed a little ditty about Jack and...Patty: The Young and the Restless Two Scoops for the Week of May 11

Diane's nightmare on The Young and the Restless wasn't so great for her, but it was a nice departure from the Artificial Intelligence story that's driven much of the show for nearly the last year. Diane's fears of losing Jack to Patty resulted in a freaky fantasy that was brilliantly acted, written, and directed, and Patty's fantasy bedroom outfit nearly stole the show!

A welcome nightmare on The Young and the Restless

Diane (Susan Walters) has been unable to let go of the hurt feelings she developed when she came upon Jack (Peter Bergman) and Patty (Stacy Haiduk) in bed, ironically, just as years before, Patty had spied Jack and Diane in a tryst.

Way back then, Patty running away caused her to fall and lose her and Jack's baby. Or did it? We'll get to that later, but last week, Y&R began a compelling noir-like series of scenes with Diane, lamenting that she and Jack were apart. She may not be ready to reach out to him in real-life (that is, the real-life of the show). However, she had a dream in which she tried to reconcile. That dream quickly became a nightmare after Diane visited the Abbott mansion in her fantasy.

The always watchable Walters delivered a heartfelt performance as Diane opened up to Jack, showing her vulnerability. She realized that Victor (Eric Braeden) used Patty to drive a wedge between Diane and Jack. Diane is nobody's pushover, but she is also capable of showing great vulnerability.

The scenes were shot through a filter that gave them a hazy, dreamy feel. Some of the camera work appeared to be done using handheld cameras, giving us a sense that something was off-balance. Poor Diane. Had she waited too long to reach out to Jack?

Jack's had enough

That's certainly how Bergman was playing Jack in these scenes. In the reality of the show, Jack's still desperate to re-win Diane's heart. However, in her nightmare, Bergman was able to tap into a different side of his character, the side that has Jack fed up with Diane not believing in him!

Bergman played Jack sternly, and as a man who's had enough of Diane not supporting him. Then, Diane's nightmare continued as Patty sashayed into the living room wearing a beautiful blue boudoir robe with marabou.

All of a sudden, we were thrown back to the 1980s or 1990s, as Y&R was famous for doing fantasy scenes. Such vignettes allowed characters to explore their worst nightmares and/or their greatest dreams coming true.

There was another reason we felt we were back in the 1980s. Patty referenced her miscarriage. Diane defended her actions, saying it was the fall that caused her to lose her baby -- not Diane. Though let's face it, had Diane not hopped into bed with Jack, then Patty never would have discovered them and never fallen.

Baby, maybe?

And here's something that really grabbed our attention! Patty claimed that she and Jack's daughter didn't die at all -- that she was alive. Is Y&R going down this path? Soaps have done stories in which stillborn babies or "miscarriages" (in which the baby will be referred to as "stillborn" in an attempt to justify setting the stage for the ex-infant's resurrection).

Whether this turns out to be true or not, it was certainly very real for Diane in her nightmare. She was not only losing Patty to her husband, but they also shared a child.

Ironically, Diane's encounter with Jack and Patty was quite, well, there's no other word for it -- artificial. But people dream things as a way to process what they're going through, right? If Diane isn't careful, Jack's current wife could end up losing her husband to his first wife!
