The Young and the Restless character Nate Hastings may be able to literally grasp things better now that he's had surgery on his injured hand. That could come in, er, handy at the end of this month as Nate's portrayer, Sean Dominic, may be gripping his first-ever Daytime Emmy!

Nate Did the Right Thing

In this exclusive interview, Dominic shares with Soap Central the scenes he chose to assemble his reel for the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, set to be handed out on Friday, October 30th! The actor is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Daytime Drama Series: Actor for his role as Nate.

It's not a surprise to Soap Central that Dominic chose scenes with co-star Zuleyka Silver, who plays Audra Charles. (That storyline not only earned Dominic his first Daytime Emmy nomination, but they also earned the actor Soap Central's Performer of the Week honors.)

"I submitted Nate and Audra's breakup," Dominic says. Audra had decided to ask Nate for his forgiveness for her conspiracy with Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) to tear apart Kyle (Michael Mealor) and Claire (Hayley Erin).

Despite Audra's plea, Nate couldn't bring himself to forgive Audra's manipulations. "Yeah, she cut Nate deep, man," Dominic says.

"A lot was going on at that time -- Nate losing his brother [Damian, played by Jermaine Rivers], dealing with Amy [Valerie Pettiford], his brother's mother, who he had come to love and care for, who had cancer, and he was trying to help her battle that," the actor points out. "The only person who was helping Nate was Audra. Learning that she had lied was the tipping point. She betrayed Nate. It just broke him, you know?"

Additionally, Dominic's reel includes scenes between Nate and Amy. "Nate went to Amy to talk to her after the breakup," Dominic says. "She asks about Audra, and she actually talked to Nate about forgiving her."

Working with Pettiford allowed for a different kind of vulnerability to come into play as Nate was more guarded around Audra. "Amy's almost like a mother figure to Nate," Dominic offers.

While the actor was thrilled to get his first nomination, he says he was surprised that Silver and Pettiford were overlooked. "I love both Valerie Pettiford and Zuleyka," Dominic says. "They gave me everything."

While Dominic has attended the Daytime Emmys before as a presenter, he suspects that there might be a few extra perks that come from being a nominee when it comes to what he'll wear on the big night.

"There's probably a designer out there who wants to lend me a tux or something, maybe some studs and cufflinks," the actor says with a smile.

Dominic will be bringing something with him to the awards as a nominee that he didn't as a presenter -- butterflies! The actor knows he wants to thank former Y&R top scribe and former executive producer, Josh Griffith, for giving him the material to be nominated. "[Josh] gave me a prime story," Dominic says. "I'm grateful that I was able to bring it to life and be recognized by my peers."
