It's the 13th anniversary of the passing of The Young and the Restless legend Jeanne Cooper, who played Katherine Chancellor. The grand dame is remembered now and always by her loved ones. The Young and the Restless, Kate Linder remembers View this post on Instagram Instagram PostKate Linder acted with Cooper, starting with her Y&R debut back in 1982. Originally, Linder's character was simply referred to as "Maid," and she recalls one day, Cooper, in character, referring to her maid as "Esther." The handle stuck. Up until Cooper's passing on May 8, 2013, she and Linder shared scenes as Esther did her level best to screen guests to the mansion, and keep it dust-free. Kay and Esther were kidnapped twice over the years. Their relationship nearly ended after Esther and baby Kate (now Chloe, played by Elizabeth Hendrickson) attempted to walk out of the mansion. Esther felt overwhelming guilt that her boyfriend, Norman (Mark Haining), had murdered Kay's beloved husband, Rex Sterling (Quinn Redeker). Linder posted a photo of herself and Cooper on Instagram, which can be seen above. Linder let hashtags tell her story, posting, "youwillalwaysbelovedandmissed #youwillalwaysberemembered @youngandrestlesscbs #yr53 #jeannecooper #esthervakentine."Kay and Jill went up a hillJeanne Cooper (Kay) and Jess Walton (Jill) on The Young and the Restless | Image: JPIJess Walton, whose role as Jill is going to temporarily be played by Lauren Koslow (Kate, Days of our Lives) next month, once recalled a scene in which Cooper displayed deft comedic timing. She shared the instance in the authorized memoir of the late Bill Bell, The Young and Restless Life of William J. Bell. "I received a script that had Jill saying to Katherine, 'You are going to tell me where Nina is, but first I need to step away. You've got me so upset my bladder is distended!'" recalled Walton. The actress found the line to be a bit challenging as it referred to her going to the bathroom on national TV. However, once she committed to playing the moment, Walton says that Cooper hit the ball back brilliantly, as she always did in their scenes. "I said it in the scene and took off," Walton recalls. "Jeanne was in the foreground writing at Katherine's desk. She was brilliant as she looked up into the camera as if to say, 'Did I just hear that?'" The Kay/Jill dynamic played from 1974, the year Cooper joined the show, to 2013, when she made her final appearance. As Katherine made her way up the Chancellor Manson stairs in what would be her final scene, Jill asked her former nemesis and current friend if she needed help. Katherine indicated she could manage alone and said, "Good night." Cooper was a mainstay on Y&R as Katherine was one of the characters who made the successful transition from the show's half-hour format to being 60 minutes in length. That's when the stories shifted from the Fosters and the Brooks to the Newmans, Abbotts, and Williams families. Catch all-new episodes of The Young and the Restless weekdays on CBS and Paramount Plus.
