Several characters on The Young and the Restless are facing challenges to their lives that most people in real life never face! Of course, we're fairly confident that Victor will eventually get his company back, Malcolm will live, and Sally will continue to support Billy no matter how many times he suffers a setback! But there's one person we're not quite sure is going to recover, and that has us chilled to the bone!

The Young and the Restless, addicted to Nick Newman

Joshua Morrow, who plays Nick Newman, is keeping us on the edge of our seats as Nick continues to battle his drug addiction. Anyone who thought that Nick was on the road to recovery after he confessed to Victor (Eric Braeden), Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), and Victoria (Amelia Heinle) that he had a drug problem had another thing coming.

We saw Nick at Crimson Lights with Vicki as the two caught up on the latest development with Matt Clark (Roger Howarth), who, once he gets his memory back, will be the most dangerous man in Genoa City.

Vicki pointed out to her brother that he can't lie to her. They know each other too well. But Nick sure gives it his all. He keeps trying to hide his pills, and he's trying to hide his addiction to them. We literally see Nick trying to keep it all together in certain scenes. And, in others, once the pills have kicked in, Nick's able to go about his way more easily. He doesn't have to wince because the pain isn't hurting as much.

A smashing white lining to an opioid addiction

There's one good thing that's coming out of Nick being unable to kick his habit, or even start to kick it, is that it just might bring his parents, Victor and Nikki, back together.

Victor is an immovable object when it comes to his hatred of Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and his insistence that Jack pay for various atrocities that he's committed against Victor over the years.

Conversely, Nikki is an irresistible force when it comes to protecting Jack and her family. Sure, Victor and Nikki made peace when they reconciled for the holidays, but that was just so they could exchange meaningful gifts (we're kidding!).

The reality is that Victor and Nikki haven't been this far apart from each other like this in many years. Are they headed for a divorce, only to inevitably remarry yet another time? Is that going to happen? Will economics allow the couple's love theme, "Through the Eyes of Love," to be played at the duo's reception?

When Nikki walked into the Newman Ranch (in that smashing white outfit -- yet another victory for Mandi Line, costume designer, Y&R!), it hit us that Nikki hadn't been in her own home in a while!

Will Victor and Nikki put aside their differences long enough to help Nick get the help he needs? They also have to ensure that the threat of Matt Clark is eliminated, not just for the sake of the Newman family, but also to make sure that Nick isn't carted off to prison!

If Nick did go to jail for harming Matt, it'd be a full circle case of irony. Nick was convicted of Matt's attempted murder and went to jail. (Matt's former girlfriend, Amy Wilson, played by Julianne Morris, was the person who plugged Matt with lead!). Just as he was about to be attacked by Larry Wharton (David Shark Fralik), Victor and some guards arrived. Victor pulled Nick's fat out of the fire, as the saying goes. If Matt winds up dead, let's hope Nick has a huge alibi!

Then again, we'd like to see Nick up on the witness stand defending himself. Morrow's been turning in a series of tour de forces, and while Nick's drug habit (we hope) will be kicked, we know that the actor will continue to impress us with his performances!
