The Young and the Restless' Phyllis Summers finally accepted defeat and handed back Newman Enterprises to Victor. On the June 4, 2026, edition of the soap, Phyllis got the charges against her dropped once Victor confessed that the evidence was fabricated. However, if she fully thought the situation through, she would have realized she held all of the cards and never needed to fold.
The Young and the Restless' Victor destroyed his own leverage

The entire reason that Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) was even considering returning Newman back to Victor (Eric Braeden) to begin with was the threat of criminal charges. The idea of going to prison left her in a panic, and she was backed into a corner, forcing her to seek out a guarantee of freedom before giving it all back. The entire case built against her was the fabricated emails, and the only way she could avoid jail time was for someone to confess to Christine (Lauralee Bell) that the evidence was false. However, the moment that Victor admitted the truth, the entire case against Phyllis collapsed.
Nick (Joshua Morrow) successfully convinced Victor to give a little and reveal that he went to such extreme lengths to regain control of his company. Once Christine was clued in on what exactly happened, she was forced to drop the charges because it would be impossible to prosecute Phyllis. Victor suddenly got exactly what he wanted, but in that moment he gave away the one thing that was applying pressure on Phyllis. The confession should have shifted the balance of power in that room because, in theory, Phyllis suddenly had a stronger position to negotiate from than ever before. Unfortunately, logic was thrown out the window, and she gave Newman back.
Phyllis dropped the ball

Once the charges against her disappeared, Phyllis could have kept the entire company. There was nothing holding her to the agreement at that point, and she didn't have to hand Newman back to anyone. She could've simply looked at Nick and Victor and thanked them for coming clean and walked out the door, still leading one of the largest business empires in the world. Nick got his father to reveal that the evidence was fake, so there was no way to pursue actual charges against her. Phyllis voluntarily honored her side of the bargain, and if she wanted to be ruthless like Victor, she could've smiled in their faces and kept herself in power. Instead, she chose to do the right thing, which should go a long way to rebuilding her reputation, but Victor isn't the type to ever express much gratitude.
Phyllis spent months choosing not to do the right thing and holding on to every scrap of power that she could. Ironically, the one time that she acted like a reasonable person was the time that she could've gotten away with it all. This cost her the most, and by the end of the episode, it felt like Victor needed Phyllis far more than she needed him. She could've changed the rules of the game at the very last second, mirroring what Victor has done to all of his enemies, and nobody would have been able to stop her.
