The Young and the Restless's 53rd anniversary episode aired today, as the show, created by the late William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, debuted on March 26, 1973. While there wasn't a huge gala at the Genoa City Athletic Club that drew the Newmans, Abbotts, and other families together as one might expect on an anniversary show, the show's creative team infused the episode with so many classic Y&R elements that we lost count after starting to add them up! For starters, there's the show's cast. Y&R's 53rd anniversary episode showcased long-running characters Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Victor (Eric Braeden), Jack (Peter Bergman), Traci (Beth Maitland), Christine (Lauralee Bell), Diane (Susan Walters), and Patty (Stacy Hadiuk). In Nikki's case, the character dates back to the 1970s. The rest all began their lengthy tenures in the 1980s. Sharon Case (Sharon), who was in the episode, began her run in 1994. There was even a shoutout to Paul (Doug Davidson) when Traci mentioned to Nikki she had reached out to Paul in light of his sister, Patty, being back on the loose! We saw showdowns between Patty and Diane, as well as Jack and Victor! The Patty/Diane rivalry dates back even further than Jack and Victor's feud. Also, there was a breakup with Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) and Daniel (Michael Graziadei), set to music, a hallmark of Y&R since its inception. There was much more to celebrate in this anniversary episode, as Lily (Christel Khalil) returned, Mariah (Camryn Grimes) agreed to seek help, and she agreed to take the plea deal, so she won't be going off to prison! There's hope for a Mariah and Tessa reconciliation now, and we can't recall a single mention of Artificial Intelligence! The Easter holiday is still a bit away, but Y&R planted plenty of "Easter Eggs," by our account, in this special anniversary show as a gift, we have no doubt, to the show's longtime fans!
