The Young and the Restless stars Sharon Case and Michelle Stafford were thrown together a year ago in a complex tale that resulted in their characters, Sharon Newman and Phyllis Summers, forming a truce. That dynamic's been tested lately, giving Case and Stafford acting opportunities to dig into their characters even further. For their recent performances, Soap Central is bestowing Performer of the Week honors on the pair.
The Young and the Restless, Sharon Case and Michelle Stafford

Phyllis has swiped Newman Enterprises from Victor (Eric Braeden) and his family, which indirectly affects Sharon, Victor's former daughter-in-law. Sharon and Phyllis crossing paths at Crimson Lights set the stage for a scenario filled with screaming matches, hair-pulling, and name-calling. However, Y&R delivered a more nuanced set of scenes as Sharon attempted to draw on the bond she and Phyllis created during their kidnapping deal from a year ago.
Naturally, Phyllis had her guard up as she's not about to give back Newman Enterprises. She scoffed at Sharon's observation that Phyllis's children, Daniel (Michael Graziadei) and Summer (Allison Lanier), would never forgive her for her thievery.
Rather than meet Phyllis with threats and animosity, Sharon opted to appeal to Phyllis's humanity. Case had her character open her heart and plead with Phyllis to be the better person she knows she can be.
Phyllis admitted to Sharon that she didn't mean to minimize Heather's (Vail Bloom) death, which she'd brought up as a weapon against Sharon. She also admitted that she feels bad (to an extent) about taking over Newman, but she wanted to know why Sharon was bashing her.
"If you feel that I'm piling on, I will stop," Sharon offered. "You're my friend. I'm just concerned about you. That's all."
Say what now? Was Sharon being sincere, or was she trying to lure Phyllis into a false sense of security? Case walked that line so carefully that we weren't quite sure.
Suspicious minds

Neither was Phyllis. And that's why we became even more drawn into these scenes and the actresses' performances. We saw Stafford play her alter-ego with trepidation as she carefully gauged whether or not Sharon was playing her.
Sharon noted that while she didn't like what she had done but the bond they created in the clinic when they were Martin's (Christopher Cousins) prisoners was still there.
Case upped Sharon's sincerity when she recounted Phyllis reaching out to her when she was in Los Angeles following Noah's (Lucas Adams) accident. "Just knowing that there was one other person out there who completely understood what I was feeling," Sharon added.
"A friend," Phyllis acknowledged, as she proceeded to take her coat off to show she was comfortable.
Was Sharon's scheme to befriend Phyllis working? Was it even a scheme, or was she being 100% sincere?
Timing is everything on The Young and the Restless

Stafford played different levels to Phyllis in these scenes as well. Was she starting to believe Sharon's sincerity? Or was she simply letting her talk long enough to give her enough rope to hang herself? "Are you trying to 'shrink' me now, Sharon?" Phyllis queried without trying to make it sound like an accusation.
"You know, sometimes I hate that we became friends," Phyllis lamented. "It was easier before...." Sharon finished her thought by adding, "When we just despised each other."
Phyllis didn't erupt into anger, but she accused Sharon of trying to get into her head when she doesn't have a clue as to what she's feeling. Sharon maintained her composure, pointing out ways in which she and Phyllis were alike.
Just as Sharon appeared to be making inroads, Nick entered, still not happy with Phyllis, and he let her know. That prompted Phyllis to accuse Nick and Sharon of trying to tag-team her in an effort to trick her.
We may never know if Sharon's plan to appeal to Phyllis was indeed a 100% genuine effort on her part to reach the redhead on a deeper level. However, what we do know is that The Young and the Restless stars Case and Stafford have yet again turned in compelling and complex performances as the AI storyline continues to unfold!
Brava to both Case and Stafford for their outstanding scenes!
