The Young and the Restless' July 1 episode featured major turning points for both Billy and Diane. While Cane extended an unexpected olive branch to Billy in the form of a Chancellor job offer, Diane continued plotting her escape from Laurence's house as Jack put a risky new plan into motion.

Sally stopped by the GCAC and found Billy sitting alone at the bar. He was still stunned that they were soon welcoming a new baby into the world. However, Sally was confident that Billy would thrive as the father of their baby, especially after watching him with Johnny and Katie.

Billy was still in a funk despite the excitement of the baby. The answer to his sour mood could be summed up in one word: Jill. His mother's return to Genoa City had him rattled and questioning everything he thought about his life. Sally questioned what brought Jill to town, and he believed it was related to the major corporate changes as of late.

Sally was stunned to learn that Lily gained control of Chancellor and put Cane in charge. Considering everything that Cane put Lily through, it was a mind-boggling decision on the surface. Billy admitted that he reacted poorly to the news, and he was focused on building his life and family with Sally.

Billy put on a brave face for Sally's benefit, but she pleaded with him to be open and honest with her. No facade. Just the reality of how he felt. Billy was hurt by Jill championing Cane's new success, especially following the way she revoked Chancellor from him and sold it to Victor. Selling him out to his worst enemy was the beginning of the end of his respect for her.

Billy revealed that not only did Jill confess that she was the secret investor for Abbott Communications, but he told her that he already knew. Sally took a big gamble by telling Billy the truth about where the money came from, so she was upset that he betrayed her confidence. If Jill wanted to, she could take Spectra-Charles away as some type of retaliation.

Sally wished that Billy never put her in that precarious position. She seemed to cool down rather quickly, and she started advocating for Billy to speak his truth with his mother. She was certain that Jill regretted some of her actions, but she needed to be called out on them. However, nothing she had done to Billy changed the love she had for her son.

Cane Takes a Chance on Billy

Cane wanted to give Billy the opportunity to join Chancellor, but Lily wasn't sure if it was the best idea. She believed that Billy might become more trouble than he was worth. Even if he agreed to join, there was the possibility that he'd be incapable of being told no. It was a massive risk, but it was one that Cane was willing to take.

Lily had been through the wringer with Billy when they previously worked together. She hoped that perhaps he'd changed since then, but she had nothing to base it on. She looked to Cane to provide assurance that Billy had shown some sort of personal growth since they were together.

Lily agreed that Sally was a sizable influence on him, but nothing trumped his obsession with Chancellor. Billy was never going to settle for being the CEO of Chancellor. His end game was always going to be to find a way to reach the pinnacle of that company.

Cane felt guilty about his actions toward Billy when he paraded around as Aristotle Dumas. He made a plethora of promises that he had no intention of keeping, and it sent Billy over the edge. Lily pointed out that Cane could very well be handing over the keys to his own downfall if he gave Billy an inch of access to Chancellor.

Cane was determined to carve out an environment where Billy could thrive. He wanted the position to be something substantial. It had to mean something and utilize Billy's full scope of talents. He wanted to make this work for Billy and for the company, but he needed Lily to sign off on it. Ultimately, she agreed, but only on the condition that if he self-destructed, he was out.

Cane phoned Billy and asked him and Sally to meet with him and Lily at Crimson Lights. Lily congratulated the happy couple on their engagement and pregnancy news. However, Billy refused to exchange pleasantries, and he wanted to know why they were summoned there.

Cane wanted to offer Billy the job as Head of Research and Development at Chancellor. The offer was legitimate, and all he needed to do was swallow his pride and accept it. Billy and Lily went back and forth about whether or not she supported him joining the company.

Lily admitted that she had reservations about him joining, but Cane confirmed that it was a legitimate offer. Billy's initial instinct was to decline the request, but Cane believed he was talented enough to make it a success. Billy turned and looked at Sally and asked what she thought about it all.

Sally wanted to take some time to discuss it before making any rash decisions. Billy wasn't sure what he would decide, but he appreciated everything Cane said. It felt like a true step in the right direction. He agreed to be in touch with his decision, and after he left, Lily loved seeing the kind and caring side of Cane.

Jack's Plan Takes Shape

Kyle finally heard back from Jack, and his father agreed to meet him at Society so he could fill him in on what went wrong with his rescue mission. Jack quickly arrived at the restaurant, and he profusely apologized for going ghost. He encountered Laurence's dogs, and he knew that the doctor was determined to keep everyone out.

Jack came up with the plan to use Patty as a means to get to Laurence. He returned home and found cat treats in her purse, which was bizarre, but he ignored it. However, he located a cell phone, and it was exactly what he needed to begin the first phase of his latest plan. He got into the phone and texted Laurence to set a trap while pretending to be Patty.

Diane Looks for a Way Out

Laurence filled Diane in about his dogs guarding the grounds, and she continued turning on the charm with him. Diane was either genuinely falling for her therapist, or she was putting on a master class in manipulation. She wanted access to her medications, but he ruined whatever plan she was cooking up. However, she drugged the food she made, so whenever he did return, he would be knocked out.

Diane got cozy on the couch with Laurence, feigning interest in his wine collection, which got him out of the room while he secured the Pinot Grigio. While he was out of the room, she went through his jacket and took out some of the sleeping pills, presumably to drug his drink. This was Diane's best chance at freedom, but if it went south, she'd likely not get a second shot.

Laurence returned and noticed a change in Diane's demeanor, and she explained that she wanted the night to be special. She laid it on pretty thick, hoping to lure him into a false sense of security. Laurence got the fake text from Jack, and he told Diane he needed to head out. She was so close to escaping, but now she had no idea when her next chance would come.
