At the Abbott mansion, Jack flashed back to Diane finding him in bed with Patty on the yacht and later confronting Patty about Diane’s disappearance. Kyle reported that Diane hadn’t been seen at Jabot since the night they’d returned from a Maryland fundraiser, and she hadn’t been at the Athletic Club. Jack answered a call from his private investigator and learned that Diane’s car had been in the club parking lot for the past two nights.

Jack called Detective Burrow, who stopped by the mansion with questions about Diane’s disappearance. Jack bet that Patty had been behind it, but he was unable to provide the detective with any solid evidence of her involvement. Burrow inquired whether Jack and Diane had been having marital problems, and Jack conceded that they’d separated temporarily.

Burrow asked if Diane had ever taken off without explanation before. Conveniently failing to mention that his mother had once faked her own death, Kyle reasoned that Diane wouldn’t have left without getting someone to cover her critical role at Jabot. After Burrow left, Jack figured that Burrow might not have looked for Diane if they’d told the truth.

Sunday in the Park with Patty

A man met with Patty at the Chancellor Park Café. She asked if everything had gone as planned, and he thought that she’d be very pleased with the outcome. She slipped him an envelope of cash under the table and requested proof that everything was going as they’d discussed before they moved on to the next phase. Traci spotted the two together and called Jack to warn him that it looked like Patty was up to no good.

The man promised he’d have proof within the hour, and he bumped into Traci as he departed. Traci wondered what “fresh misery” Patty had been cooking up with the guy. Patty claimed that he was the doctor who’d treated her at the psychiatric clinic, and she encouraged a skeptical Traci to look up Dr. Lawrence Markham.

Jack approached and demanded to know what Patty had done with Diane. Patty referred to Diane’s history of vanishing and thought he should cut his losses. Jack revealed that he’d called the police. Patty hoped he got the answers he needed, adding that she had a strong suspicion it wouldn’t be what he was expecting.

Diane staggered into the living room of an unfamiliar house. She called out to ask if anyone was there and wondered where she was. Diane realized she didn’t have her phone or purse, and she couldn’t find a landline. She tried opening the front door and discovered it was locked. Diane found bars on the windows, which she also couldn’t open. As she struggled to make sense of things, she discovered books written by Dr. Alan Laurant on the bookshelf.

Diane found a letter opener and attempted to jimmy the door lock, vowing to get back to Jack. She heard a key in the door and brandished the letter opener in front of her. Dr. Markham entered and remarked that he was happy to see her looking considerably better than when she’d first arrived. Diane asked who he was and why he’d locked her up there.

Markham agreed to answer Diane’s questions in time, but he explained that he needed to evaluate her current emotional state first to determine whether she was a danger to herself or others. He noted that wielding a weapon was cause for concern, and she set the letter opener down. Markham informed her that he was a psychiatrist and that she was locked there for her protection. He divulged that they were staying at his private residence until he determined where she should go next.

Markham claimed that Diane had suffered a nervous breakdown. She protested that it wasn’t true, but the doctor asked about the last thing she remembered before waking up there. Diane refused to be held against her will and told him to get out of her way. Markham suggested that she collect her thoughts while he made them some tea. He picked up the letter opener and exited through another locked door.

Markham returned with a tray of tea, but Diane refused to eat or drink anything he gave her. He swore he had no ill intentions and sipped the tea himself. Markham mentioned that he’d found her in her car on the side of a country road, screaming and inconsolable. He continued that he’d called the police, and her husband had arrived, expecting her to go home with him. Markham said Jack had seen her erratic state and blamed himself for causing her mental breakdown, so he’d enlisted Markham’s help to get her treatment.

Diane recalled that she’d left the office around 9:00 p.m. Markham told her that he’d found her around 9:45, after she’d suffered a nervous breakdown triggered by feelings of abandonment and loss. He suspected that she’d developed a defense mechanism of denial to shield herself from the pain, and he intended to work through her denial to get to what had been behind the breakdown. Diane was adamant that he take her to a clinic with nurses and staff.

Jack and Traci returned home. Jack found a photo of Dr. Lawrence Markham online, and Traci confirmed he had been the man meeting with Patty. Jack noted that the doctor ran his own behavioral clinic and seemed legitimate. Traci identified the clinic as the facility where Patty had been treated.

Later, Patty showed up at the mansion and showed Jack a photo on her phone of a sleeping Diane. Patty proposed that they talk about Diane’s future – and theirs. Patty assured Jack that Diane was where she needed to be after suffering a horrible breakdown because she hadn’t been able to face the fact that Jack had been drawn to another woman.

Patty claimed that Markham had recommended a clinic where Diane could get treatment. Jack threatened to call the police, but Patty cautioned that it would be disastrous for Diane to involve the authorities. Patty sympathized that it was hard for Jack to deal with the guilt of knowing he was the cause of Diane’s mental break.

Playing along, Jack conceded that Patty had insight into what he was feeling, so she knew he wouldn’t relax until he saw for himself that Diane was okay. Patty lectured that seeing Jack would only set Diane back. Patty advised Jack to accept that Diane was no longer an option for him, and he had to make a different choice. Patty implied that something unexpected would happen to Diane if he didn’t choose a future with Patty.

Jack blasted Patty for trying to blackmail him into a relationship. Patty insisted that she had a firm grasp on reality, and they’d come full circle just as the universe intended. Patty proclaimed that Jack was free of the arrangement he’d called a marriage, and they would get to recapture the magic they’d shared on the yacht.
