Adam walked up to Sally, who was sorting through some things outside of Chancellor Cafe. He wasted no time spilling the news that he heard about her engagement. Adam mustered out a genuine congratulations, but she knew that he wanted anyone for her other than Billy.

Adam wanted Sally to figure things out for herself, but even though he didn't approve of Billy, he wanted only the best for her. He brought up the pregnancy, and the vibe shifted to something far more tense. Sally knew that it likely felt like a gut punch coming from Billy instead of her. It didn't go well, but that couldn't come as a shock to anyone.

Sally asked Adam to talk with her about how he felt about the pregnancy, especially after they lost their own child, Ava, a few years ago. Adam tried to skirt around the conversation, and she urged him to be honest and upfront about his feelings. After pressing Adam for the truth, he admitted that he was sad about the news because of losing Ava the way they did.

A temporary truce

Phyllis arrived at Victor's door, and she seemed fully exhausted, as if all of her options had officially run out. She lost all bargaining chips and any leverage she had to keep Newman and get the charges dropped, so perhaps she finally accepted defeat.

Phyllis wanted to find Nick and see for herself that he was doing fine, but she didn't want to interact with Victor at all. She tried to leave, and he asked her to stay so they could have a talk. Victor explained to her that after the car crash with Matt, Nick ran out of meds, and Matt used fentanyl to get his enemy addicted.

Phyllis was floored to learn about Matt's involvement in the drug trade. She had no inkling that Matt got Nick hooked on pills, and it was the same Matt Clark that also saved his life. Victor showed a moment of humanity and confessed that nearly losing Nick terrified him.

Victor set aside his issues with Phyllis for a moment and thanked her from the bottom of his heart for saving him from death. Phyllis said that she loved Nick, and as the father of her daughter, there was no way she wouldn't do anything she could to save him. They both got a bit emotional about it, and she asked Victor to pass along the message that she wanted to see for herself that he was okay.

Man or monster?

Matt had a flood of returning memories, remembering everything about the laundry list of lies and pain he caused Sienna and the Newmans. All of it came rushing back to him. Every single heinous act was suddenly vivid, and he was fully aware of the dangerous man he had always been.

Every attack on Nick, Sharon, Noah, Adam, and Sienna was crystal clear, and there was no outrunning his past. Matt broke down into tears, having finally remembered who he was and how horrific his actions were. This was a far different man than the monster who committed all of those crimes, and nobody knew how to react.

Sienna tried to comfort Matt because she was one of the only people who knew him well enough to calm him down. She was certain that Matt didn't pose a danger to anyone in the room, but everyone else wasn't as sure. Matt couldn't stop crying and panicking because he was forced to come to terms with the monster he used to be.

Matt admitted that he liked the pain that he caused in the past, which made him flip out even further. He tried to escape, but naturally, Nick didn't let him go anywhere. He still wanted Matt to pay for everything he'd done to harm his family.

Matt asked for everyone to give him the chance to make amends. He didn't want to lose his life without attempting to right his wrongs. The crying continued as he pleaded with Nick and Noah for mercy.

Nick took off with Matt and left Noah, Sharon, and Sienna behind to deal with the aftermath on their own. They couldn't hand Matt over to the police because there were no charges that would stick and send him to prison. This was the human embodiment of being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Matt and Nick returned to the ranch, and Nick begged his enemy to calm down while he left. This version of Matt was a shell of the person that he used to be prior to his head injury. Nick explained to his father about Matt getting his memory back, but even he believed that the agony Matt experienced was real. He wondered if the threat was already gone.

Victor demanded that he would be the one to handle Matt because Nick needed to focus on his treatment. Victor explained to Matt that saving Nick from an untimely death didn't wipe away all of his crimes against his family. Matt understood because he felt like he didn't have a soul. This felt like the end of the road for Matt.

Later on, Nick and Phyllis ran into each other at the GCAC, and she was happy to see him alive and well, but she was still shocked that Matt got him hooked on drugs. Nick pleaded with Phyllis to withhold the truth about his addiction from Summer until after he sought treatment.

Phyllis had a million questions about Matt and the charges against her. She wanted to know if prison was still on the table, especially after she saved his life. Nick called out Phyllis for harboring a fugitive, but she tried to downplay what she did. She was completely stunned that Nick was irate with her, as if a complete switch flipped in his head against her. Nick threatened to go to the police and turn her in for working with a known criminal that was on the run.
