The Young and the Restless truly spread the wealth this week, propelling several storylines and dynamics forward as Jack fought for freedom, Nick and Adam reminded us they truly are brothers, and Cane let out a cathartic scream!

What happened on The Young and the Restless

Finally! Victor (Eric Braeden) went to Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) to cut a deal to re-win Newman Enterprises. We have to admit that we haven’t been on board with what Phyllis has done because, at the end of the day, it’s illegal! But one thing that Phyllis never brings up is that Victor once hired a doppelganger (Marco Annicelli) to take Jack’s (Peter Bergman) place (he sure likes kidnapping Jack, doesn’t he?) and that double ended up having sex with Phyllis. There’s something seriously wrong with that. Phyllis has no reason to ever like or trust Victor, and she should want to bring him down!

However, Victor went to jail for his crimes in that storyline. Could the same thing happen to Phyllis? She eventually might need the services of a good lawyer. Paging, Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc)!

Before we get there, we hope there are going to be a lot more interactions between Victor and Phyllis. Despite all of Phyllis’s antics, Victor almost appears bemused by Phyllis’s bravado. Who knows? In another time and under other circumstances, these two would have a very different relationship than the one they have today!

No man is an island

Trapping Jack on a boat with his ex-wife, Patty (Stacy Haiduk), is one of Victor’s more dastardly moves. He is the one responsible, right? Patty claims not to know. But, of course, it’s Victor. Who else would do this to Jack? Who else would want to get him alone on a boat away from his circle of friends and his family? Well, actually, Patty would. Hmm… She is, after all, crafty enough to come up with this. It’s smart of Y&R to bring back a Patty who is reformed (well, “reformed,” at least) and is in control of her faculties. The child-like Patty was certainly fascinating to watch, but a Patty in control of her mental state will remain two steps ahead of everyone.

He probably already knows this, but Jack has a great wife in Diane (Susan Walters). About a year ago, she was putting the final touches on the Abbott mansion remake. She won over everyone, including, eventually, Billy (Jason Thompson). Well, Diane has outdone herself in light of Jack’s kidnapping.

She’s been horrified, angry, determined, and frantic. The question is, will she be forgiving? If the teasers for next week are any indication, Diane just might walk in on Jack and Patty in an intimate and vulnerable moment. Y&R knows that once one conflict is resolved, then characters need to be thrust into the next one right away!

Bon Voyage, and this time she means it!

Victoria has gone back and forth so many times on her trip to Italy to find Summer that it feels like she could have literally gone back and forth all the way to Italy a few times by now! She had a great idea to use Phyllis’s daughter against her, which would hopefully leverage Phyllis into giving up the company.

As always, we are wondering why the lawyers of Genoa City aren’t involved in this case! They’d have this tied up in court so that it wouldn’t be worth trying to control these companies. And we’re also wondering about the hundreds (thousands?) of employees at Newman, Chancellor, Newman Media, and other affected companies, who are out of work! What are their stories?

Nobody’s safe

We found out last Christmas that Victor and Nikki’s marriage isn’t safe. He showed her where the door was when Nikki pushed her husband to back off from hurting Jack Abbott. Here we are, about to hit St. Patrick’s Day, and it’s clear that Victor isn’t swayed by Nikki caring about Jack. If anything, that only spurs him forward to attack the man!

Victor and Nikki split in the late 80s. That was around the time that the show went to No. 1. Viewers were glued to their seats throughout the 90s, hoping, waiting, praying for the couple to reunite. Victor got married three times – to Ashley (then, Brenda Epperson; now, Eileen Davidson), Hope (Signy Coleman), and Diane Jenkins (then, Alex Donnelley; now, Susan Walters) – before he and Nikki retied the knot. And even then, it wasn’t legal! Viewers had to wait another four years for them to have a legal reunion.

What’s the point of this? We know that Y&R is not afraid to split up Victor and Nikki. They’ve been sparring like prizefighters over Jack and the AI program. Might Victor and Nikki actually split up? If so, viewers will go back to longing for them to reunite – again.

Brothers in charms

Nick’s likely addicted to pain pills, but like a lot of addicts, he’s able to hide it very well. He’s not seeing things clearly, as evidenced by his determination to bring Matt down by himself. Adam is willing to help his brother, even if it means revisiting his time in life as the enigmatic Spider. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge between Nick and Adam. They’ve been rivals, enemies, competitors, but now, they might be something we haven’t seen all that often…what’s that? Brothers!

AI Madness

Cane (Billy Flynn) knew a letter to Phyllis wouldn't go over well on The Young and the Restless | Image: CBS

It's rare to see someone on soaps truly break down and realize what a mess that they've made out of their lives. But that's what we got when Cane (Billy Flynn) tried to drop by to coerce Phyllis into helping him get back Lily (Christel Khalil) and their kids, Charlie (Noah Alexander Gerry) and Mattie (Lexie Stevenson). Alone, Cane realized a note to Phyllis wasn't going to work. He hoped that a video to Lily might fare better. Time will tell if it does. But there's no doubt that Flynn turned in a terrific performance. Check out our write-up of Flynn as Y&R's Performer of the Week. We were moved by Flynn's performance, and Lily just may be, too!
